At 15, Hazel fell pregnant. It was 1976. Did she keep her baby, give him up, or was he taken from her? Hazel’s parents have recently died and their house is now on the market. That much is set in stone but nothing else is certain.
Each performance of this part-devised, part-scripted, part-improvised show is unique, as it navigates the same set of starting points from where the actors take Hazel (now 65) and her son, Robert (50) on an infinite number of different journeys before ultimately coming full-circle back to the house where each of their lives began.
Perhaps Robert grew up here too. Perhaps he didn’t. Has Hazel inherited the house, and does Robert come seeking his mother? Or is Hazel returning, hoping to find the son she lost? Perhaps they have always known each other but were estranged from Hazel’s parents and returning reveals truths neither expected. Perhaps one of them didn’t even live to tell the tale.
Each performance explores these possibilities anew. What happened immediately after Robert’s birth and how each of their lives have panned out since, what revelations each makes and how the other reacts are different every time. Guided by audience choices at various points, the actors each discover the other’s journey in real time, surprising each other and themselves, as the story unfolds.
In the various tryouts in 2025, as a work in progress, audience comments included:
‘I had tears in my eyes and goosebumps’
‘A nice feeling of working out what was going on while it was unfolding... not spoon fed, but not lost either.’
‘Echoes... .of loss, hidden shame, guilt and tenuous love.’
‘So many different outcomes of a very common situation that can and does affect many people from around the world... Very clever.’
‘LOVED it! A fascinating and original take on the choices we make.’
